It's been a while.
Good morning from beautiful Colorado!
It's been some weeks since I've posted. Yesterday, I spent good time writing a post about something that occurred blog-related that took the wind out of my proverbial sails. It quashed my spirit. I don't mean the legal term of quash but the synonyms fit - repress, quench, squash, crush.
And then, I did something that made the Word doc disappear. Grrrr. I was trying to copy it here but something about my Command C and Command V is not working.
Thus far, even my HH (handsome husband Del) can't find it.
If I find it, I'll letcha know.
*******
Instead, I thought I'd share a true blessing from the Lord that is meeting several of my heart's desires. Psalm 37:4 is a foundational verse for Del and me. In fact, it is engraved on our wedding rings. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.
Desire One: To Volunteer with the Aged
When Mama was in a memory care unit in Peachtree City, GA, I loved and enjoyed her - of course - but also many of her resident friends. Here she is with one of her friends looking at the new fallen snow. So precious. Mama is on the left.
I have a special affection for the elderly. My first field placement in grad school was in a nursing home. Dr. Susie O Mercer was my supervising professor. Geriatrics was her specialty. A dear woman named Hazel was my very first client. More about her in a subsequent post.
Since Mama died March of 2019, I've thought about this increasingly large population. It seemed there were so few residents where Mama lived who had family that visited regularly. When we moved from GA to CO, I looked at positions for LCSWs serving the elderly but nothing worked out. Instead, I continued here what I had been doing in AR and GA - counseling/psychotherapy via video.
I had heard about the volunteer work my lovely friends Cindy and Steve were doing through our church. Taking music and singing into three senior living facilities in the area. What I didn't know was that two of the places were here in Castle Rock where we moved to June 2024!
Desire Two: To be in a choir
I can still sing parts of songs from a Fellowship Bible Church choir in the late 1970's and early 1980's. The same is true of songs I sang with our choir at Covenant Presbyterian. Music is such a gift - plenty of the scriptures I know are from songs I would sing with our children while they were growing up.
In March, both of these desires of my heart were fulfilled. On Monday mornings I now join C & S - first at an assisted living place, followed by a brief drive to a memory care place. I am getting to know the dear residents of both these homes and enjoy singing as loudly as I care to! Harmonizing to my heart's desire - even if it is off key and I don't know what I am doing!
